Among the plants they found and consumed as they travelled was hogweed/cow parsnip. This has remained an important vegetable for Native Americans until today, with the masterly ethnobotanical survey by Nancy Turner (2014) recording cow parsnip in 45 native languages from the American northwest and interior.

Turner relates how on the west coast people would travel long distances in spring to favorite gathering places with the best-tasting cow parsnip plants. The shoots growing in shade were said to be milder-tasting and preferred to those in full sun.
