AMARANTH (Amaranthus spp.)

I am new to growing amaranth. Admittedly, I have stayed away from it because of the seeding reputation it has. I figured if I was growing it to harvest the seed, that shouldn’t be a problem; time will tell if I have unleashed my next headache.

I foolishly sowed this grain as a cool season crop, and was so disappointed that the seed sat dormant while my cool season grains happily grew. But then the soil temperatures rose to 60°F and suddenly there was a groundcover visible overnight. Realizing my mistake, I took some time to thin the seedlings into a mid-border area of my foundation landscape.

To say the least, the amaranth grew with vigor to over 6' tall and set MILLIONS of seeds. Amaranth has been growing for thousands of years in warm climates as an important, gluten-free carbohydrate source. As more people become afflicted with gluten intolerances, crops such as quinoa and amaranth offer a significant solution.
