ALTERNATE FLOWERS Replace the crabapples with pear or apple blossoms or mock orange (Philadelphus). Other flower options: white narcissus, white or pink peonies.

3 TO 5 CRABAPPLE BRANCHES WITH PINK BLOSSOMS

1 The urn is deep enough that it does not require an anchor. Fill three-quarters full with water.

2 Trim the crabapple branches, and cut an X in the bottom of each. Position the branches to form a base layer, placing them in the center of the urn and arching to the right and left.

3 Trim the hawthorn branches, and cut an X in the bottom of each. Intersperse the branches among the crabapple. They will form a fanlike backdrop for the flowers.

4 Trim the foxgloves to three-quarters of the height of the tallest branches. These will provide a medium-range focus for the arrangement. Position some extending up into the center of the arrangement and others overlapping the edge of the urn and extending downward.

5 Trim the olive branches, and cut an X in the bottom of each. Add them to the urn so they curve down over the edge of the urn on the left and right sides.

6 Trim the carnations, anemones, and ranunculus so they occupy the lower third of the arrangement, and position them in the center of the urn.
