Twenty-Two

She didn’t find him at the Blue Drake, which was packed with lunch customers ordering the Blue Balls Burgers from Alvin’s. Out of Kendra’s view, she stole upstairs to Gault’s apartment, but found it empty. Her heart sank. It was silly to be so disappointed. But she’d had her heart set on seeing Conor’s slow smile and his thoughtful gray eyes connecting with hers. She could practically feel the sparkling happiness that would fizz through her system at the sight of him.

Each moment that she didn’t see him, her desire for a sighting amped up higher. How nuts was that? What was wrong with her? This was all Conor’s fault. He’d done something to her in Hawaii. He’d gotten her hooked and now he was all she could think about.

Finally she ran into Alvin Carter as he swung open the screen door of the busy kitchen, carrying a case of tomatoes.

“Hey there, you must be Ava Curtis’ baby girl.” He accompanied that shocking statement with a wide smile. “Evangaline, is it?”

“Emmaline. But how did you know? I look nothing like her.”

“You’re wrong about that. I knew you right away.”

It surprised her that Alvin would be familiar with her mother; as far as she knew, they didn’t know each other. But Alvin was the kind of man who knew everyone, she supposed. “I’m looking for Conor. Have you seen him?”

He waved her through the screen door. “He’s repairing some damage in the Wood Duck cabin. A guest’s dog got left inside for the day and just about tore apart a wall trying to get out.”

“Conor knows carpentry?”

“Conor knows YouTube,” he answered dryly. “But he’s got a good brain on him.” He set down the case and glared at the kitchen worker running the grill. “They’re supposed to be Blue Balls Burgers, not Balls of Fire! Turn that down!”

As the kid scrambled to obey, Emmaline pushed through the screen door, the hinges making that classic summer keep-out-the-flies noise.

A path ran alongside the lake, past one A-frame cabin after another. They each were named for some kind of duck, some more obscure than others. Surf Scoter? Hooded Merganser? It was a whole education, scanning cabin names.

Finally she located the Wood Duck cabin, identified by a hand-carved sign mounted above the door, which stood open. One of its panels had been shredded into splintered tatters. She tapped on the door and peered inside.

Conor crouched on the floor next to the damaged pane. He was frowning at his iPhone, which was playing a video in which a man’s voice intoned words like “load-bearing” and “stud.”

He looked up in relief at the sight of her. “Thank God. Please tell me you need something so important that I have to abandon this project immediately.”

There it was, that smile. And those eyes. And so much more. The groove in his cheek, the sawdust in his hair, the light scruff on his jaw, the line of his shoulders, his strong hands.

Strong, but apparently incompetent in some areas.

With her need to see him finally satisfied, she felt something ease inside her.
