Mr. Crank hangs up, and I just sit there, swinging my legs under the chair.

I look around the room. Everything is dreary and gray. The walls. The pictures on them. Even Principal Crank in his gray suit with his gray hair.

There is a knock at the door, and Mr. Karas enters.

“I’m here to report an update on the auditorium,” he says. “The janitor rolled up the curtain and will have a crew repair it over the weekend. Minnesota Clark and his team are fine. They are continuing with their presentation. They said it was the most excitement they’ve had in a while. I guess that means they won’t be suing the school, right?” My teacher lets out a nervous chuckle and stops short.

Principal Crank’s face turns bright red like a strawberry. I can imagine steam shooting out of his ears.

“Do NOT make jokes!” he shouts.

Mr. Karas takes a step back.

I feel a little less alone. I guess grown-ups can get yelled at too.

“Well, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll return to the auditorium with the rest of my class. Billy, I hope this is a lesson to you,” my teacher adds.

Mr. Karas walks out of the room, leaving me alone with Principal Crank again.

After waiting for what feels like five hundred forevers, my dad shows up. He nods at the principal and then looks down at me.

“On your feet, William,” he says.

I get up and follow him out the door. For the second time that day, I march to my doom.
