Conclusion

Through the sacraments, God applies the saving power of Christ’s Cross to heal and elevate our lives, so that even here and now we are drawn into God’s own life of Trinitarian love. The sacramental life makes clear that we are on a journey and that Christ Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, is with us every step of the way, uniting us to himself, healing and restoring us, strengthening us for spiritual battle, and guiding us to the Father. This journey is not that of an isolated individual but that of a member of Christ’s body the Church. On our journey we depend upon others for the mediation of Christ’s power and presence; Christ thereby forms us in receptivity rather than self-sufficiency, and also shows his own glorious humility. The sacraments underscore that Christian life is neither an angelic existence nor a merely intellectual union with God. Rather, the details of birth, food and drink, public activity, and death belong to the sacramental life. So too do the visible ways in which charitable communion manifests itself: marriage and holy orders in the Church. By enabling us to be united to Christ’s Cross (and thus to his Resurrection) through the sacraments, God enables us to live the call to holiness. We do so in a constant struggle with sin, whose depth the Cross itself measures. The Christian life consists in an ever-expanding love, which involves all Christians in self-sacrifice, service, and discipline, and which unfolds constantly under the rubric of God’s incredible gifts of love and mercy.
