Antiseptic mouthwash

300 ml (½ pint) water

30 ml (2 tbsp) white wine vinegar

a few cloves

1 cinnamon stick

a little lemon juice

Boil these together for 10 minutes, then cool, and keep in the fridge for a few days. Use as a mouthwash and gargle twice a day.

DEPRESSION

This is a condition which affects most of us at some time or another, but which can become an illness requiring treatment if unduly prolonged. There are many causes of depression, chief among them fairly obvious ones such as failure at work, loss of a lover, or death of a relative or friend. Unrelieved anxieties about work, money, health and living conditions can add up ultimately to a more acute depression. Sadness, general despondency and tearfulness are common symptoms, but if these ‘take over’, showing no signs of diminishing after a week or so, and the health of the sufferer and/or family are beginning to be affected, then proper treatment is required.

Many plants and plant oils have an effect on the nervous system. At its simplest, pleasant smells can always help lift the spirits. Oils can help balance the nervous system, relaxing and restoring imbalances, and galvanizing into action. Particularly effective are the citrus oils like neroli, and others like basil, marjoram, melissa, thyme and verbena.

AROMATHERAPEUTIC TREATMENTS

The energizing herbs marjoram and thyme are good. Eat them in salads or cook them with other foods.

Avoid the caffeine stimulants like tea and coffee and replace them with teas of marjoram, mint, verbena and thyme. Boil ginseng roots in a double boiler for a couple of hours and drink a glass of the liquid first thing in the morning.

Diffuse a few drops of marjoram or thyme in your rooms. They will help cheer you up. When in season, cut hyssop and thyme flowers and have them on your table. They are happy flowers and their scent will slowly diffuse around you. A flowering lemon or orange tree will also be uplifting.

A few drops of oil such as basil, marjoram, neroli and thyme can be mixed with some grapeseed oil and rubbed on to the back of the hand, the stomach and solar plexus. Also use them in your bath.
