If you are really watching your dollars, you may want to take advantage of one of the do-it-yourself programs, such as SiteDelux. These programs offer templates; you only need to enter your copy and add pictures, and voila, you have a Web site. The downside to using a template is that you are limited in your creative options, and it is possible another business's site could look startlingly similar to yours. Some Web hosting companies offer templates as part of their services. You can shop and compare.
If you want to get a little more creative and come up with a truly unique site design you might try one of the WYSIWYG (pronounced wizzy-wig â what you see is what you get) programs such as Microsoft's FrontPage, Macromedia's DreamWeaver, or Adobe's GoLive. A little more skill is needed for these but they operate with software you may already have in your computer. If you are really ambitious you can always take a class to master HTML (hypertext mark-up language), which is the computer code that brings you what you see on your computer.
AllBusiness.com offers the following recommendations as design resources:
Usability.gov ( www.usability.gov ): This is a Web site hosted by the Department of Health and Human Services. It can offer you help with design basics and usability statistics, and give you notices of conferences you can attend.
Useit.com ( www.useit.com ): This site is run by Jakob Nielsen, a noted usability expert, who offers the ultimate in guidance on his site.
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0: This is a resource from the World Wide Web Consortium specifically written for tailoring Web site usability for people with disabilities. These standards can be used broadly to make your site useful for any visitor and thus are definitely worth following.
