Talk it over. If you and your parents want to be satisfied with your plan, then it is important that you all come to an agreement beforehand about what is expected. Put in writing what you will receive each week, on what day you will receive it, and what you are responsible for doing. You may even wish to put in a paragraph stating that the agreement is subject to renegotiation in six months or a year. If both you and your parents sign the agreement, you have made a contract—just like in the real world of business!

Although we’ve been talking about weekly allowances, you can make other arrangements. If your mom or dad gets paid once every two weeks, then it might make sense for you to be paid on the same basis. Some kids are paid monthly to give them practice in setting up and living within a budget.
