Assistance from Siblings

As evidenced by Mary and John’s family, the older siblings were influential in the younger children’s lives and learning. The younger children wanted to emulate their older siblings and do school along with them. And the older children enjoyed seeing the younger ones learn from them. This can be a great source of satisfaction for older children and helps to reinforce their own learning, as well.

Let your older children know that you don’t expect them to teach the younger ones. However, you would appreciate them interacting with the younger ones, continuing to extend goodwill and kindness toward their brothers and sisters. If they could help entertain a younger child while you help a middle child with a lesson, it could make parts of the day go more smoothly and allow more time for everyone at the end of the day.

Observe your older children to see how they take to this. You don’t want to see them develop a grudge toward the younger children. At the same time, every member is an important part of the family unit, and it’s important that everyone gets along and respects one another.

Remember to show your appreciation to the older children, and never take them or their help for granted. In fact, reward them by allowing them some extra free time, or arrange a special time when they can just be with you, apart from the rest of the family.
