Question

What if your random roommate’s tastes are radically different from yours?

Keep in mind that you were likely paired intentionally — the housing staff probably hoped that you could learn from one another. Focus on finding things that you have in common and build on those. Even if you dress differently or enjoy opposing forms of entertainment, perhaps you both appreciate the same foods or have similar study habits.

If you choose to live with a friend, you should first have a long conversation with her about how you’re going to manage your room and your friendship. Can you resolve disagreements without dragging mutual friends into the conflict? What if your shared interests begin to diverge and you start to head in different directions? Because you’re already friends, how much time do you expect to spend with each other while at college? You need to address these issues as soon as possible so that you can make an informed decision and move on.

Even if you and a friend plan to attend the same college, there are benefits to deciding to live apart. If your friend lives elsewhere on campus you will have another place to visit, you can double the number of people you meet, and it will likely be easier to preserve your valued friendship. After a semester of college, once you know what living with a roommate is all about, if you and your friend still want to try living together, it is probably worth a shot.
