ROBERT OSBORNE

“Shelley Winters is wonderful in this movie and this really elevated her to star status. It changed thewhole course of her career.… And people should watch for Elizabeth Taylor doing a faint. I think it’s the best faint ever done on film. She walks into a room and literally collapses. She doesn’t cushion herself; she just falls, like a bag of potatoes or something. It’s amazing.”

Shelley Winters as Alice, with Montgomery Clift. Both were Oscar-nominated.

Stevens filmed A Place in the Sun for over four months starting in the fall of 1949 and then spent nearly a year editing and honing a mountain of footage. The picture was released in September 1951 to excellent reviews. After the premiere, Charlie Chaplin was heard calling it “the greatest movie ever made about America.” It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including acting nods for Clift and Winters, and it won six, including Best Director, Screenplay, Score (Franz Waxman), Costumes (Edith Head), and Black-and-White Cinematography (William C. Mellor). It was nominated for Best Picture but lost that award to An American in Paris.
