Q. Does the fluid ever escape from the mouth or nostrils while injecting bodies dead of consumption?
A. Yes.
Q. What is the cause of this phenomenon?
A. A rupture of either the bronchial or pulmonary circulation which would allow the fluid to escape from these vessels and flow into the air cells of the lungs, from which it could easily pass into the bronchial tubes and thence through the trachea and out of the mouth or nostrils.
Q. What would you do in a case of this kind?
A. If the bodyis to be kept for a long time, make a leaflike incision in the skin just above the sternum or breast bone, raise the integument and uncover the trachea; then make a small incision in the trachea and fill it with cotton, and, using a full curved needle and a strong string, pass the needle under the trachea and tie that organ tightly; this will prevent any further escape of fluid.
Pnetsmonia
Q. Describe the morbid condition of a body dead of pneumonia?
A. Oedema of the lungs (water in the air cells) is liable to be a condition of this disease. The color 0/ the lung tissue is a reddish brown, and when cut a bloody serum often escapes. In many cases serous fluid is found in the pleural cavities. The right chambers of the heart and great veins at-

tached to the auricle are well filled with blood which is very liable to be coagulated.
Q. How would you treat a case of this kind?
A. If no discolorations on the exposed parts are noticed, first inject the body arterially, being careful to inject very slowly. This accomplished insert the aspirator tube and test the pleural cavities for serum; draw the blood when necessary by tapping the right auricle of the heart, or using the internal jugular vein, as in this case a small vessel will seldom answer the purpose on account of the tendency of the blood to coagulate.
Pletiritis
Q. What is pleuritis?
A. Inflammation of the pleura, more commonly called pleurisy.
Q. Should any special treatment be given a body dead of this disease?
A. The oi>erator should be careful to draw the water from the pleural sacks, remove serous matter from the lungs and inject the air cells of those organs with fluid. In this disease a large quantity of fluid is sometimes found in one of the pleural cavities, which may push the heart to one side, making it diflficult for the operator to reach the right auricle for the purpose of drawing blood.
Purpura
Q. Describe the disease known as purpura.
A. This disease is characterized by rupture of the capillaries and extravasations of blood in various parts of the body, causing spots to appear on the exposed surfaces, which are very difficult to treat successfully. If the spots are on the face, it is just possible to remove them by injecting that part through the common carotid artery. If this is not successful
a hypodermic needle and a good bleaching fluid properly used will at least improve the appearance.
