GLEANING & GATHERING WILD FOODS

Gleaning, an old practice recommended in the Bible, is simply harvesting leftover or neglected fruits and vegetables from farm fields. Gleaning can happen in grape fields post–wine crush, or in your neighbor’s forgotten plum tree. Wild foods can be found in wilderness areas and parks, where delicious weeds, nuts, and mushrooms might lurk.

To become a master gleaner and gatherer, you’ll have to become organized over the years. Cultivate relationships with farmers who will allow you to collect what’s left over after the main harvest. Have a calendar that is marked with a list of fruits and nuts in your neighborhood. Here in California we know that morel mushrooms spring up in May; green walnut and feral plum season is in early July; olives are in November. In the Pacific Northwest there are wild blackberries in summer; in the South, wild mulberries. Every region has their glean-able crops! Be sure to take notes on where your favorite gleaning and gathering spots are, and remember to share, and leave some of the crop behind for others.
