4. Hydroquinone
This liquid is so toxic that the FDA issued a warning against it in 2006 and is considering a partial ban on skin lightening products that contain it. (Its use is already restricted in Canadian cosmetics.) Why? It is suspected to cause a skin disease called ochronosis, which causes disfiguring blue-black lesions and small black bumps to develop all over your skin. Also, animal studies dating back to the 1920s suggest that hydroquinone can be toxic to the neurological system even at low doses; the EPA classifies it as a known human respiratory toxicant; and the European Union classifies it as a skin irritant and notes that it may also cause cancer. Hydroquinone is most often used in skin lightening products, but it can also be added to other kinds of face creams as well as hair dyes and fragrances.
