Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34 (1887)

“The Capriccio was to glitter with dazzling orchestra color,” Rimsky-Korsakov wrote. And so it does, even after a century and a quarter of use. In a good performance, its effect can be electric. After hearing it, Tchaikovsky wrote to the composer, “Your Spanish Caprice is a colossal masterpiece of instrumentation, and you may regard yourself as the greatest master of the present day.” The premiere took place on October 31, 1887. There are five movements: “Alborada,” “Variations,” “Alborada,” “Scene and Gypsy Song,” and “Fandango of the Asturias.” Rimsky-Korsakov reports in his autobiography, Chronicle of My Musical Life, that “at the first rehearsal, the first movement had hardly been finished when the whole orchestra began to applaud. Similar applause followed all the other parts whenever pauses permitted. I asked the orchestra for the privilege of dedicating the composition to them.”
