These criteria have guided the development of the genre units we use with our intermediate level students throughout the year. If students are scheduled into a two-hour block, it is possible to teach several genres a year. Problem-solution, persuasive, and autobiographical are three genres that are commonly taught and assessed in high school, and also exist in college and in real-world writing. Of course, these are not the only genres that students need to be exposed to, but they each contain critical thinking and writing techniques that students will use both in and outside of school.

This section will explain the key components of a problem-solution genre unit for intermediate students. Problem-solution is a powerful genre for students to practice because it involves elements of both persuasive and narrative writing. There are many activities students can do in order to build their knowledge of both persuasive and narrative techniques used by writers. Students must be exposed to the features of this type of writing many times in order to replicate these features in their own writing.

The following sections describe ways to both develop student knowledge of the problem-solution genre and provide opportunities for valuable listening, speaking, reading, and writing practice. The learning process is one of guided discovery using inductive learning as a key component. While students demonstrate this learning by producing a problem-solution essay at the end of the unit, you will also see that students can practice other types of writing, including responses to on-demand writing prompts. This unit takes six to eight weeks, depending upon the level of the class and whether the students take the class for one or two periods.
