Beginning with 5:13 Paul gives direct teaching and exhortations regarding the practical Christian life. That he should do this after the doctrinal exposition of the previous section (III) is in keeping with his procedure in some of his other letters (cf., e.g., Rom. 12:1ff.; Eph. 4:1ff.; Phil. 4:1ff.) and points to an important truth: doctrine is the foundation on which the Christian life is to be lived and life is the sphere in which doctrinal truths are to be applied.

A general description of life in the Spirit (5:13–26) is followed by several more specific principles (6:1–10).1 It has been conjectured that Paul is combating here a party of libertines who considered him to be insufficiently emancipated, but the evidence is insufficient to establish the existence of such a party in Galatia.2 More likely he is taking issue with the false position that freedom from the law issues in moral license—a conclusion either mistakenly drawn by his own converts or, more probably (cf. on 2:17, 21; 5:6), wrongly considered by his opponents to be the consequence of his preaching.3 In any event Paul corrects the erroneous conclusion by holding up the Christian life as a life lived under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
