WARD HILL LAMON stirred the pot when he wrote an open letter to the Chicago Tribune in 1886 purporting to tell the real story of that fateful day. Remembrance is so often characterized by the intent to place the rememberer close to Lincoln, usually closer than other mortals. Lamon offered from memory whole conversations with Lincoln, Seward, and Everett on that celebrated day at Gettysburg. Lamon expanded on this account in his reminiscences, edited by his daughter and published in 1895. In chapter 11, “The Gettysburg Speech,” he added to the myth that Lincoln had gone to Gettysburg unprepared. Lamon asked his audience to believe that a day or two before the dedication ceremonies, Lincoln produced from his hat a memorandum for the intended address and read it to Lamon. After its delivery at Gettysburg, Lamon said, Lincoln expressed regret that the speech was not more carefully prepared, and offered his own judgment of his remarks. “Lamon, that speech won’t scour! It is a flat failure, and the people are disappointed.” Lamon also asserted that Seward and Everett believed the president’s address a failure.16
