JACKALOPE

A fictitious creature from the folklore of North America, the Jackalope is said to be a cross between a jack rabbit and an antelope, and is usually portrayed as a rabbit with antlers. Some legends report that the Jackalope can convincingly imitate any sound, including the human voice, and it uses this ability to elude pursuers. Certainly, Jackalopes are so shy that none have ever been captured. Those who have taken the existence of this creature seriously have suggested that it may be a hybrid of the pygmy deer and a species of killer rabbit! It is possible that the legend springs from sightings of actual rabbits infected with a virus that causes hornlike growths on various parts of the body. Other witty names for this creature are Antelabbit, Horny Bunny and Stagbunny. The origin of the Jackalope legend is attributed to the writer Douglas Herrick (1920-2003) of Douglas, Wyoming, who seems to have invented it for the amusement of his family.
