When the twenty-year old arbor at the entrance to the potager needed to be replaced, an alternative entry was designed instead. A change that opened up the garden and gave it a fresh look and feel.

Ironically, it was only after most of us had grown up and flown the coop that my parents decided to cultivate and tend a rather large, in-ground vegetable garden on a lot they purchased next to our home. It was filled with Indiana sweet corn, green beans, lots of tomatoes, herbs, and other delectables. More free time and their retirement made such a garden possible for them, along with continued good health, reliable Indiana rainfall, a good tiller, and lots of neighbors and friends happy to share in the excess. And those now adult children who would come home to help. At the time, raised beds had not reached the popularity they enjoy today. So, when they were ready to downsize their in-ground vegetable garden, no structural changes or bed removals were necessary. They simply sold the lot to some good friends of theirs who built a home in its place, and my mother created a small herb garden with a few tomato plants behind the house. I don’t know that they planned any of those design changes at the outset of starting the garden, but it certainly worked out in elegant fashion for them in the end.
