Pastor Mike Coleman, a friend of mine, once said that he was told by a Hebrew professor this is one of the reasons Saddam desired to rebuild Babylon—to prove the Bible was wrong! Throughout the Old Testament the prophets gave grave warnings about the utter destruction of Babylon. Many references are found in Jeremiah, chapters 50 and 51:

Therefore the wild beasts of the desert with the wild beasts of the islands shall dwell there, and the owls shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited for ever; neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation.
