Epilogue

About Three Months Later

Britta wrapped the soft green scarf her mother had knitted for her carefully around her neck. She zipped up her coat even though she was already warm in anticipation of whatever Milo had planned for the day. It was ten o’clock and unseasonably mild for January first, which Britta was grateful for since Milo had told her they’d be outside for the activity. A few seconds ago she'd watched Milo pull into her driveway and could barely keep herself from running down the steps to meet him. He'd been planning this night for two weeks, at least that's when he'd asked Britta if she would go on a date with him on New Year's Day that would be full of surprises. No matter how much she begged, Milo wouldn't give in or give her any hints.

Milo knocked on the front door as Britta opened it for him.

"You look beautiful as always, Britta," Milo said. He stamped the snow off his feet before coming inside and closing the door against the winter chill.

"Thank you. You look wonderful, and excited,” Britta said. She noticed the way Milo’s eyes twinkled and thought she might burst if she didn’t find out what he had planned soon. “I'm ready to go. Are you sure you can't give me even one hint?"

"Okay, I'll give you one hint." Milo stepped closer to her, pulling her into his embrace and kissing her in that way that made her feel like a snowman in front of the fireplace. He stepped back and winked. "You ready?"

"I thought you said you’d give me a hint," Britta protested.

Milo raised an eyebrow. "I just did."

Britta laughed, falling more in love with Milo every minute. For the past two and a half months they had been inseparable, spending as much time as they could together. Britta had started to think about the future, and everything she planned had Milo in it. She couldn't imagine her life without him.

"Okay, let's go because I can't wait to find out what you have planned."

Milo smiled and held out his arm for her, guiding her down the icy steps. His car was warm and toasty with a new age piano song playing in the background. Milo turned the music down a bit as he put the car into drive. "How's everything going with the remodeling plans for the library?"

"They're saying everything should be finished by March or April of next year and they want me to plan the grand reopening celebration." Britta rubbed her hands together and held her fingers in front of the heater vent.

Milo reached over and grabbed her hand, interlacing their fingers together. "That sounds like a big job. Do you think they will have hired new help by then?"

Britta loved the way Milo was always looking out for her. He knew how much she loved working at the library, but he worried that she worked too hard. "Yes, they plan on hiring a few people to work in the children's section. That will free me up to do more of the work that I want to.
