Tidy up! Immediately clean your brush, particularly if you have an oil-based finish, seal the can, and put it all away. Know, for oil-based finishing; you should scrub with paint thinner.
Oil & Wax
How the two pieces fit together is the secret to an oil and wax finish. Firstly, to lend it a warm glow, the boiled linseed oil soaks into the wood and produces a thin protective layer. With just a single coat of linseed oil, the color and figure of the cherry, walnut, maple, and even oak would literally 'pop.' Yet oil itself doesn't shine at all. And that's where the wax gets into the picture. A thin coat of paste wax brushed over the oil and then rebalanced out will add another protective layer and leave a soft shine that cannot be beaten.
Phase One:"Using P220-grit paper to reveal the wood's figure and luster, sand, paying special attention to end grain and sharp corners." In order to lift the grain, clean the whole piece with a moist rag. Then sand the wood gently with 400-grit paper (CAMI). Finally, polish with either a grey abrasive pad or 0000 steel wool on the whole floor.
Phase Two: Add the linseed oil. Enable the oil to reach the wood for an hour, and then use a clean cloth to wipe the surface dry. Wait two days, and then in the same manner as the first time, add more oil. Wait two days, then add a third coat of oil if any places are still collecting oil. Note, make sure to scatter the used clothes outdoors to dry to prevent accidental combustion of oils, which can spark flames.
Phase Three: Wax the Piece Rub the surface with a white abrasive pad after the last coat of oil has settled for two days to buff out any little dust inks. Then brush on a layer of wax with paste. Flavored wax can be used if you want to darken the look. Wait for thirty minutes, and then use a piece of soft cotton fabric to buff the surface.
