Leiberg had important news to absorb while he recovered from his stomach upset. At the beginning of August, Government Land Office surveyor Oscar Sonnenkalb had arrived at Idaho’s Township 53 North. Sonnenkalb’s rod-and-chain survey would lay out section lines across Rathdrum Prairie, east to the Chilco Saddle, and north to include the Leibergs’ peninsula at the south end of Lake Pend Oreille. His results would determine which parcels of land belonged to the Northern Pacific Railroad and which were available for homesteading. John and Carrie were about to learn the status of the property that they had protected so carefully for a decade.
