Naked Cop

1993. jpn: Hadaka no Keiji. prd: Tōru Kinoshita. dir: Hirokazu Fuse. scr: Hirokazu Fuse, Kenichi Onishi, Toshimichi Ōkawa, Kazunari Kouchi, Toshio Okumura, Yū Kaneko. cast: Hiroki Matsukata, Masanori Sera, Shigeru Muroi, Isao Hashizume, Kirin Kiki. chn: NTV. dur: 45 mins. x 30 eps.; Fri 8 January 1993–24 September 1993.

With “human interest” police shows such as Hagure Keiji seeming to win in the ratings war, NTV canceled its relatively successful Cop Clan to try this new drama, featuring Hiroki Matsukata and Hiroshi Fuse from the previous show. Recycling the “death on duty” formula introduced by Howl at the Sun, the show even killed off the lady detective played by Shigeru Muroi, who was gunned down in the line of duty by criminal Kyūsaku Shimada. However, despite NTV’s faith in the material, the ratings were lower than expected. Later episodes attempted to return to a more action-based format but the show was canceled. Although the NTV Friday slot had been dedicated to cop shows for 21 years since the first appearance of Howl at the Sun, the failure of Naked Cop brought it to an end. Theme: Eikichi Yazawa—“Tokyo.”

Nanako in Training

1997. jpn: Kenshū I Nanako. prd: Hideki Ōno. dir: Ikuhiro Saitō, Noboru Sugiyama, Hiroshi Ikezoe. scr: Hiromi Kusumoto. cast: Aiko Satō, Naoki Hosaka, Taichi Kokubu, Megumi Kobayashi, Shirō Itō. chn: Asahi. dur: 45 mins. x 9 eps.; Mon 13 October 1997–8 December 1997.

New surgical intern Nanako (Satō) is clumsy under pressure, which causes many problems for her with her stern medical resident observer (Hosaka). NiT is a comedy in the style of It Started with a Kiss with an added medical twist, based on the 1994 manga by Kozueko Morimoto. Theme: Every Little Thing—“Shapes of Love.”

Nanase Again

1979. jpn: Nanase Futatabi. prd: Kanae Mayuzumi. dir: Minoru Hanabusa, Haruo Yoshida, Kazuya Satō. scr: Yoshio Ishidō. cast: Yumi Takigawa, Yoshitaka Niigaki, Alexander Isley, Masami Horiuchi, Fumiaki Sakabe, Hajime Nakajima, Hiromi Murachi, Nagahide Takahashi. chn: NHK. dur: 30 mins. x 13 eps.; Mon 6 August 1979–18 August 1979.

Nanase (Takigawa) is a telepath, forced to stay constantly on the move for fear that people will discover her ability to read minds. One rainy night on a train, she meets two boys with similar powers. Tsuneo (Horiuchi) is a clairvoyant who predicts the train will meet with a terrible accident, while Norio (Niigaki) is an empath who confirms he is telling the truth. Trusting in their beliefs, the children escape from the train moments before it crashes. On the run from Norio’s stepmother, who believes they are sorcerers, the trio hide out in Tokyo where they befriend bar worker Henry (Isley). Though hardly inconspicuous (three unaccompanied children and a towering black man!), the group travel to Hokkaidō, where they are able to prevent a would-be murderer from slaying his girlfriend. There, they meet Fujiko (Murachi), a girl who has no extrasensory powers but who reveals that she is a time traveler from the future.

Traveling into the past, Fujiko discovers that the trio are all descended from a family of telepaths who flourished in Hokkaidō 500 years earlier.
