To sum up…

So there we are: three different ways to feed your dog, all of them with their own pros and cons. Ultimately, of course, it’s down to what works best for you and your dog but I hope it’s become clear that giving your dog the same food day in, day out is a recipe for all-out boredom and long-term health problems.

I feed Nikita a combination of all three types – shop-bought/commercial, home-cooked and raw. She will eat anything except fish or any kind of cereal-based dog treat. (In her world if it looks like a dog biscuit, and it smells like a dog biscuit, it cannot be classed as food.) She won’t eat dry kibble either unless it belongs to the cat and there is a power struggle in progress. I supplement her food with omega oils and a seaweed supplement.

In winter she and the cat are partial to a little scrambled egg and the occasional spoon of porridge – needless to say, no salt or sugar added. They are both in fine fettle, only a little paunch on Pearl, but she is 15 and some days she eats just to stop the dog from scoffing it.

Our much-loved and remembered lurcher, Bud, loved nothing more than a raw egg once in a while. He’d play with it, tease it along the patio floor, until he could bear it no longer, then crush it, eating the contents and shell, leaving nothing behind. I also have some lovely photos of him lying down next to a lump of cucumber. He liked to gaze at it for a while before demolishing that too.

Variety, balance, freshness and quality are the key to the continued health of my pets and hopefully yours.
