Boxed Lunch or Dinner

Boxed picnic meals add a rustic, old-fashioned feel to an outdoorsy wedding. To take the stress out of serving, have helpers make up picnic meals the morning of the wedding. Choose items that hold up well—fruit, cheese, crackers, sandwiches, fried chicken, hardboiled eggs, sturdy brownies—and package them in boxes or brown bags with napkins and cutlery. (Unbleached waxed paper bags make attractive, environmentally friendly single serving packages.)

Simple embellishments make all the difference. Tie up a napkin-and-cutlery bundle, main dish, and/or the box or bag itself with ribbon or raffia. Place a fresh flower inside the box. Put a personal “place card” on each box or bag, or write guests’ names directly on the packaging in a creative way. Building in a short walk from the boxed-lunch table to the dining spot adds to the sense of adventure. Add a bar with cold drinks and you’re good to go.

Delicious Little Meals

Here are some location-specific serving suggestions that can help you circumvent the sit-down dinner without sacrificing style:

• On a sunny patio with a stunning view: a simple brunch and champagne cocktails

• In a loft or the cool marble lobby of an elegant building: light hors d’oeuvres and a martini bar

• In a cozy library full of leather furniture: a dessert buffet, with coffee and liqueurs

• At a private home, or in the courtyard of a pretty little church: cake and punch

• In a vineyard setting: a wine tasting with fruit and cheese

• On an enclosed patio strung with twinkling lights: guacamole, chips, and margaritas
