“So,” said Snakeweed, toying with a pebble as he spoke to Architrex, “it looks as though you’ve fouled up.”

Architrex could feel his tail creeping further and further between his legs. Surely it was Snakeweed who’d decided the boy wasn’t a boy after all, and sent him to the place from which he’d escaped?

“Is he a human being then, master?”

“So it would appear,” said Snakeweed. “He used science to open the cell door.” He held the pebble up to the light, just above his glass of fertle-juice.

Architrex watched, transfixed, with whatever passed for his heart in his mouth.

Snakeweed smiled, and dropped the pebble dead-centre into the glass. It landed with a loud plop, and Architrex raised his nose to the ceiling and howled. After a moment or two he realised that he hadn’t turned to treacle, the way he should have.

“That wasn’t your pebble, Architrex,” said Snakeweed. “But next time, it will be. The human must be found, and found quickly – and Ramson must be eliminated too.”

“There are posters all over the town.”

“You failed with the sister as well, didn’t you?”

“She’ll be back in Geddon by now,” said Architrex uncomfortably.

“She can wait, then. And the tangle-child got away too, didn’t she?”

Architrex felt sick. He’d never had so many failures in all his two hundred and fifty-three years before.

Snakeweed suddenly changed the subject. “I have my researchers working on the dimension business,” he said. “They’re making good progress, but not good enough. What we really need is a brazzle, to do the calculations.”

“I’ve never heard of a brazzle co-operating with anyone except a brazzle before,” said Architrex.

“One was seen on the road out of Tiratattle yesterday,” said Snakeweed, picking up another pebble. “Find out what it was up to, Architrex.”

“On my way,” said Architrex, and he left as quickly as he possibly could.
