Chapter 5

Desirae dropped Titan and James off at Tiffany’s house then went to work. When she arrived and pulled into the parking lot, it wasn’t much surprise to her to find that Greg was already at work. She smiled, knowing that he was probably looking forward to getting more details about Saturday. Desirae knew that even though a lot of this was for her benefit, through pay raises, and to let Tron see that another man would gladly snatch her up, she knew that she was giving Greg something that he just wasn’t used to in his life. In fact, the look on his face when she’d pulled her clothes off said it all.

Desirae pulled into a spot twenty feet or so down from where Nalique had parked. She walked into the store, waving hello to her coworkers that were out on the floor. She looked for her girl, Nalique, and found she was nowhere around. Desirae walked back to the store’s employee break room and pushed the door open. Immediately, her face met with Nalique, who appeared to have been texting or doing something on her phone as she sat at one of the tables.

“Hey girl,” Nalique said. “I looked at the schedule, but I ain’t know if you worked today. Shit, with how much you havin’ to talk to Greg, you got me thinkin’ that I’mma come to work one day and find you ass done been got up out here.”

Desirae laughed, setting her purse down on the table. She pulled out a chair and sat down. “Naw,” she said, quickly thinking up fluff to fill the conversation. “That’s not gon’ happen,” she said. “Greg just been talkin’ to me about my…about my attitude and whatever. He don’t really want nothin’ like that girl, I swear.”

“Hmm, hmm,” Nalique said. “Well, just so you know, he had told me to tell you to come see him when you got here. That was before whatever her name got here, though.”

Desirae looked at the wall that divided the break room from Greg’s office. “Before who got here?” she thought, assuming that the she was a Corporate representative or somebody like that. “Who here, Nalique?”

“Girl, clam down,” Nalique said, reaching out and tapping Desirae’s arm. “Chill out. It’s just his wife, Veronica. You ain’t hear the two of them arguing when you came walking through the door up in here?”

Desirae shook her head. “Naw,” she said. “I ain’t hear nothin’.”

Nalique told Desirae to be quiet and the two of them listened. Desirae could definitely hear what sounded like soft arguing going on in Greg’s office. Her heartbeat jumped as she wondered if there was any way that Greg’s wife had seen the two of them leaving the store later than usual last night.

“Girl, what they arguin’ about?” Desirae asked, breaking the silence.

Nalique shrugged. “Oh, I don’t know,” she responded. “She got here like fifteen minutes ago and been in there since. Don’t nobody care about that bitch, though. She stuck up, some sort of educated bitch or somethin’.
