American blueberries are closely related to European bilberries. In many experimental and human clinical studies, treatment with blueberry extract provided dramatic improvement in brain function and a protective effect against neurological degeneration. In addition, both extracts have been found to increase brain and eye circulation and prevent age-related eye diseases. Overall, the flavonoids in blueberries and bilberries, because of their antioxidant activity, increase glutathione levels in the brain and eyes, decrease free radical damage, and prevent glycation.
Gamma tocopherol and ascorbyl palmitate are important fat-soluble antioxidants to prevent neurological degeneration; they also keep the lipids in the brain and aging formulation from being oxidized.

Endgame:
Avoiding Disease
Ìn the preceding chapters, I provided tools for ensuring a lifetime of good health by supporting your body’s powerfully protective detoxification systems. But putting these words into action, given our human nature, usually requires some motivation. There is nothing like a health alarm to get things moving. So let’s look beyond our discussion of the wonderful health benefits of food and supplements to what happens if our detox systems don’t get the support they need. Let’s look at the insidious world of cancer. How Does Cancer Develop?
Cancer results from the complex interaction of many factors related to our environment, lifestyle, diet, and genetic makeup. These interactions are most often connected with what we eat and drink, use of tobacco products, exposure to sunlight and ionizing radiation, and exposure to cancer-causing agents found in our environment.
Cancer begins and flourishes in most of the tissues (organs) in our bodies where cell replication is continuously taking place. In healthy Copyright 2003 by Thomas J. Slaga and Robin Keuneke. Click Here for Terms of Use. 125

tissues a balance between cell death (apoptosis) and the formation of new cells is strictly controlled. By contrast, cancer cells divide and grow in an uncontrolled manner and the abnormal cells can spread to other tissues or organs. Carcinomas, sarcomas, myelomas, leukemia, lymphomas, neuroblastomas, and gliomas constitute the main categories of cancer. Carcinomas are the most common cancers arising in tissues of the skin, oral cavity, lung, breast, and vagina, among others; sarcomas are found in the connective tissue cells; myelomas and leukemias originate in cells of the blood-forming portion of the bone marrow; lymphomas are found in the lymphatic system; neuroblastomas arise from neuroblast cells, which are related to the sympathetic part of the nervous system; and gliomas are cancers that arise in the brain from connective tissue–like cells called glial cells and astrocytes. Most cancers exist in the form of tumors, which are either malignant or benign. Malignant cells can spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or bloodstream. If
