ROMAN MOVED IN front of Ezra and watched fear and panic flit across his face before his features settled into what might have been resignation. Was he an idiot for hoping it might have been pleasure?

“Following me again?” Ezra asked. “I thought you’d had enough of me this morning.”

If only he had. When he’d not been worrying about the city being overrun by demons, or stressing about the reappearance of Daniel, he’d thought of Ezra on his knees in front of him, how that sweet mouth had felt around his cock. Roman had zero sensation that he stood next to a demon. But maybe that was because Ezra was super-talented at hiding his true nature. But aren’t I supposed to be an expert at identifying demons? Except, perhaps, those he lusted after?

The moment Inigo and Micah had dropped him off outside the library, Roman had had the strong feeling Ezra was inside—but that was all. No alarm, no…spider-sense of danger or evil. He’d stood near the entrance, trying to figure out what to say, what to do when he saw him, and now that Ezra was next to him, the sensations that filled Roman were nervous anticipation and acute excitement, not fearful anxiety. Nothing about Ezra said demon.

And yet…

“Ezra!”

Roman tore his gaze away from Ezra’s face to see a guy hurrying toward them, clasping a book.

“I’m glad I caught you.” The man held out a hardback copy of Moby Dick. “Surplus to requirements. You can finish reading it.”

“Thank you.” Ezra turned the full wattage of his smile on the guy, and jealousy tugged at Roman’s heart.

“I should have thought… Do you want to give me your phone number in case I find out before the month is up?” the man asked.

Ezra shook his head. “I’ll contact you. I’m not in any rush.”

As the man walked away, Roman grabbed the book and flipped through the pages. It really was Moby Dick.

Ezra held out his hand. “What did you think it was? The Wicked Wizard’s Book of Evil Spells?”

He tucked the book away and slung the backpack on his shoulder.

“Sorry,” Roman said. “Sorry about this morning.”

“Sorry it happened?”

“No,” he blurted. “Sorry for insulting you.”

“You followed me to say that?”

“Among other things.” He really didn’t think it was the time to tell Ezra what he really wanted. “What are you doing here?”

“Not that it has anything to do with you, but I was doing some research.”

“Into what?”

Ezra glared. “That really doesn’t have anything to do with you.”

“What happened at Kings Cross?” Roman didn’t miss the flicker of discomfort that crossed Ezra’s face.

“You mean the woman who collapsed? I helped her up; that’s all.”

“Who were you with?”

Ezra’s already pale face turned ashen. “Who are you?”

“That’s my line.”

“I’m nobody.”

Roman’s phone vibrated, and he pulled it from his pocket.

“We’re supposed to be working together,” Daniel said. “You’re losing your touch. She’s outside in the café, not inside the library. I’ve called for a vehicle. Your guys are closest.”

Roman swallowed his surprise. “I needed the bathroom.”

“You must have walked straight past her.
