PERCEPTION AND MEMORY SHARE CIRCUITRY

Human cognitive deliberation, mental models, schemas, pattern processing, conceptualization, hierarchical relational reasoning, language, and the like are products of the kind of brain we have. And within the brain, cognition is to a large degree a product of our cerebral cortex, especially the laterally located neocortex.

Anatomists have traditionally divided the neocortex into four main lobes: occipital, temporal, parietal, and frontal (figure 48.1). But in order to understand the neural basis of cognition, we can’t stop at such a coarse level.
