On the first day

1. Once you’ve arrived at your location, turn off your phone and put away any other immediate distractions. There may be some distractions inherent with your location of choice (dogs barking outside, for example), but that’s okay. We’re not here to control everything, we’re just here to experience.

2. Sit comfortably.

3. Notice your breathing for a few minutes, then as best you can, allow your mind to settle. From a mental perspective, that’s it. We’re not here to think or analyze our experience. With a relatively calm mind, just allow any sensations to come and go of their own accord.

4. Notice these sensations, but don’t hold on to them. Allow them to drift away as easily as they came up in the first place.

5. After 10 minutes or longer, return to your breathing and end the session.

6. Write down any sensations that have stuck with you. Then put away your notes and go about your day. It’s important to only think about the sensations that stay with you naturally. This will keep you from trying to hold on to anything during your practice.
