Chapter 5

Another Sign of His Coming

In this chapter, we will pause in our trip through the Scriptures to expound upon an important point.

The Word has shown us that national Israel has been regathered in her ancient homeland for the purpose of glorifying God. This is a great sign that we are near the end of the present age. There is, however, another great sign that the Lord is nearly ready to return. What is that?

The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Body of Christ, also reveals the progress of God's work of redemption.

EPHESIANS 4:11-13

11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12 For the PERFECTING of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a PERFECT man, unto THE MEASURE OF THE STATURE OF THE FULNESS OF CHRIST.

Therefore, we see that the Church will reveal maturity "unto the measure" of Jesus Christ Himself! (The word translated "perfect" in these verses is better understood "maturity.") In the fifth chapter of Ephesians you will see that the Lord is coming for just that kind of Church—one without spot or wrinkle:

EPHESIANS 5:25-27

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might PRESENT IT TO HIMSELF A GLORIOUS CHURCH, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

To understand this verse in its full light, think of a family. God is comparing the Church with a family. In a family, there are mature members and immature members. The ones who are not yet mature are guided and blessed by those who already are full-grown and mature.

Jesus is coming for a Church that, as this verse says, is glorious. It also is a Church that will demonstrate true unity in the Spirit. Members of His Body will love one another selflessly, demonstrating the love of God and, thereby, the power of God to the whole world.

We have a part to play in achieving this. In the next chapter, we will examine in detail what God's Word says about our preparation for the great events when Jesus first comes for the Church and later comes to establish His kingdom on this earth.

Webster's dictionary defines the word "posterity" as follows: (1) all of a person's descendants, (2) all future generations. I want to point out what the Scriptures teach concerning two great posterities that have come from Abraham.

GENESIS 22:16-18

16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou has done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:

17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven,
