1970s: The Dalai Lama Forges the “Middle Way”

In 1970, as a part of his ongoing efforts to save Tibet’s culture, the Dalai Lama started the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. Located in Dharamsala, the library and archive are now home to more than 80,000 manuscripts of critical importance to Tibet’s culture, history, religion, and governance. In this library, precious manuscripts that were smuggled out of Tibet on yaks along with the Dalai Lama have found a home. In addition to books, the library also houses Tibetan artifacts such as statues, mandalas, and thangkas, which are elaborate paintings executed on cotton or silk. The third floor of the library came to be officially designated as a museum of Tibetan artifacts, many of which date back to the twelfth century.
