Factors Affecting Behaviour
Natural instincts affect behaviour, so when choosing a pet dog, always research the breed and Breed Group. There are seven Breed Groups: Gundog, Pastoral, (Herding in the US), Working, Hound, Utility (Non-Sporting in the US), Terrier and Toy.
All Dachshunds are in the Hound Group - or The Noisy Group! Hounds just love to alert you. There are over 30 dogs in this group that, on the surface, do not appear to have much in common. The Dachshund, Irish Wolfhound, Saluki, Finnish Spitz, Rhodesian Ridgeback and Whippet are all members. What they do have in common, however, is they all use sight or scent to hunt their prey.
Typically, hounds chase and they will dig if they find a scent to follow. Most are very loyal and get along with children, but can be harder to train or to call back when a hare has just taken off across the field. If you do not have the time to train these dogs and walk them on a good hourâs walk at least once a day, then they are not for you. The upside is when they have walked, they are the laziest dogs of all!
Another extremely important factor affecting behaviour is socialisation, or dogs meeting other dogs of all sizes, shapes and colours, and people with different smells, colours and moods. Socialisation is so important for a dogâs happiness and mental health. If you buy a dog and he never goes out, never sees other dogs, cats, cars, bikes, people or buses, when he does go out, he is very frightened by all these moving things. Your dog may walk quietly by your side, but if heâs not socialised, there is an increased risk of him showing aggression if someone approaches.
Imagine you are born and everything is blue. You are blue, your mum is blue, all your brothers and sisters are blue, and you are all happy in a safe, warm, blue home. Then one day a pink person arrives and takes you away from your safe blue home. You are thrust into a world of red, yellow, green, orange, pink â itâs scary! But if you were introduced slowly to the other colours a little at a time, youâd be far less afraid.
