FLORIDA LOVEBUGS

Because huge swarms of mating March flies are present at certain times in Florida and other Gulf states, these insects have earned the common name of lovebug, or occasionally honeymoon fly. Lovebugs are able to fly about in flagrante delicto, with the pair connected at the abdomen, and it is in this position that they remain for days on end. The smaller male often perishes, and the female continues to fly about with her deceased paramour affixed to her body.

When lovebugs swarm, they can be so numerous on highways that they become a nuisance or even a hazard, if their numbers are sufficient enough to cause obstructed visibility when they splat across the windshield glass. They are even known to cause motor failure if enough bugs are sucked into the radiator air passages, resulting in a reduction of the cooling system. There is much local lore surrounding the lovebug in the Gulf states.
