The nettle is host to many of Britain’s most beautiful butterflies, and environmentalists now encourage us to set aside a patch for them in our gardens. Modern farming practices, including the use of chemicals that drift into hedgerows and kill the plants there, have wiped out great swathes of nettles.

The Romans brought the seeds of one of our common nettles to help cure ailments resulting from the damper, cooler British climate. The legionaries were said to whip themselves with bunches of nettles to warm up their bodies and improve the circulation of the blood. Nettles used to be consumed in wine by more suspicious Romans because it was believed to be an antidote to poisoning by hemlock or deadly nightshade.
