* Although there has been some suggestion that Edward himself had thought of it before. Beaverbrook, albeit an interested party, quoted him as having said, ‘I always thought I would get away with a morganatic marriage.’

* Edward was incorrect in this assumption. Attlee wrote in his autobiography that none of the Labour Party would have supported him, save for a few intellectuals ‘who can be trusted to take the wrong view on any subject’.
