Embroidery thread is made of six strands of cotton, which you’ll need to separate out before using. This technique makes it hassle-free. Take the end of a single strand of thread, and hold it firmly. With your other hand, gently pull the rest of the strands away. Repeat this process to get more than one strand. Choosing how many strands to use in your project depends on the fabric you are using and the effect you are trying to achieve. Put all the strands you want to use together, and thread a needle as usual. If you are double threading your needle, this will double the amount of strands per stitch.
The backstitch is a very important stitch in embroidery. It is strong, neat, and makes attractive lines. It will take you a couple of goes to master it, but don’t give up! Make a single, straight stitch about ¼ inch long. Continue along your pattern line from the underside of your fabric, and come back up to the surface of your fabric ¼ inch ahead. Next, bring your needle back down into or near the same hole at the end of the last stitch you made. This is why it is called a backstitch: you are bringing your stitch back to the end of the last stitch. If you’re finding it tricky, search online for a video to help you.
