You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.

So what makes Christians different from demons in their beliefs? The word believe in this verse is translated from the Greek word, pisteuo. It is the same Greek word used in John 3:16, “Whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Pisteuo means to have faith. This faith is vital for your salvation.

But note James’ warning! Even the demons have faith that God is Who He says He is. They tremble because of what they know. Will there be a demon in heaven? No! Will a demon ever experience life in Christ? No! So what makes the difference? Being in a covenant relationship with Jesus Christ results from a faith filled repentance, confession, and surrendering your life to Jesus. This makes the difference.

As a Christian who believes in Jesus, what proves you are different from a demon who believes in Jesus?

If you abide in Christ, you will be bearing the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). A demon cannot bear the fruit of the Spirit. A demon believes in Christ; but a demon does not abide in Christ. A demon is not in a covenant relationship with the Creator of the Universe. A demon is not made in the image of God. A demon cannot be a brother or sister of Christ. Jesus came to save people from their sins into a relationship with God through Him.
