Chapter 30

Esther switched on her laptop and as she waited for Cottage Cam to load, she delved into the fridge for the ingredients for dinner.

It was getting to be a habit, turning on Cottage Cam while she was cooking. Not that she “cooked” that often. For the first few weeks after Josh had left she hadn’t felt the urge. Now that she was feeling more like herself, the weather had turned warmer and she’d been living on salads, with the odd pasta meal thrown in for good measure, so she still hadn’t been doing much cooking.

But tonight Charlie, Sinead, and Abbie were coming to dinner and Esther intended to pull out all the stops. She planned Thai fish cakes for the starter, chicken in a creamy bacon, mushroom, and garlic sauce for the main course, and red berry pavlova for dessert, accompanied by several bottles of wine which were already chilling in the fridge.

She was delighted, and slightly spooked, to see Cottage Cam Man (she must think up a proper name for him) doing the same thing in his kitchen, and she watched as he opened a bottle of wine and placed it on the countertop to breathe. Esther didn’t intend letting hers breathe – the wine would lose all its fizz. She had a feeling that his single bottle would have cost more than her four bottles put together.

She put the sautéed potatoes to one side, then decided to light a couple of candles. Not because it would be romantic, but because the glow was pretty and they infused the air with the gorgeous scent of vanilla and magnolia. And when she glanced back at the laptop screen, she noticed Cottage Cam Man was doing exactly the same thing.

Ooh, now that really was spooky. But it was comforting at the same time, as though she was actually sharing the experience of cooking dinner with someone. It almost felt as though the two of them were preparing food together, in the same kitchen.

Esther wondered what he was making. It was difficult to tell because of the angle of the camera, but she had a feeling the oven was involved because every so often he would bend over and disappear from view, and a faint cloud of steam would appear in his place. She had a hunch he was quite a good cook, although she had nothing to base this assumption on except for the fact that he seemed to know his way around a kitchen.

As for the woman Esther had caught a glimpse of a while back, she didn’t think it was his wife. She’d come to the conclusion that he didn’t have one, otherwise Esther would have seen her more often. Girlfriend, then? Possibly.

Knowing that the woman didn’t live in the cottage with him, didn’t make it any easier to accept the fact that he was taken, and that was that.

Eh? Esther paused – what on earth was she thinking? As if a girlfriend would make any difference since there was no chance of them ever meeting, and she had no idea where he lived or who he was.
