John Herald has taken Peter, Paul and Mary to court for their use of his version of “Stewball” without credit to him. They should also acknowledge Elizabeth Cotton in their singing of “Freight Train.” . . . Hootenanny magazine is now adding an eight-page section to its Canadian edition. Lynn Musgrave, of Boston Broadside [later the Broadside of Boston—Ed.], has joined the magazine’s staff. . . . Broadside Magazine (NYC) has received a grant from the Newport Folk Foundation.

The Foundation also hired Ralph Rinzler, on a full time basis, to find and record traditional performers all the way from Mexico to Canada. Some of the singers will appear at the next Newport Folk Festival. . . . Frank Wakefield has taken Ralph’s place with the Greenbriar Boys.

Percy Faith has recorded an album of folk music for Columbia. . . . The American Folk-Blues-Gospel Caravan has signed Rev. Gary Davis, Brownie McGhee, Sonny Terry, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Cousin Joe, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and Mississippi John Hurt to tour England beginning May 9th. . . . Kazoo sales have climbed 1,000% in Pasadena, since the Ice House began to sell them. The famous folkplace offers a free, “guaranteed” lesson to anyone requesting one. . . . Phil Devin tapes a folk music show every week in NYC. It is played on KINE, Kingsville, Texas, every Sunday at 1 pm. . . . Folksinging begins in Washington Square Park, NYC, on Sunday April 5th. Singing will be permitted around the hear Pete Seeger’s opening concert in Fountain, until the end of October, every Sunday from 2–7 pm.

Fred Berk will lead a folk dance tour to Israel from July 14–August 13. He has produced the Annual NYC Israel Folk Dance Festival for the last thirteen years and founded the Jewish Dance Division of the YMHA. Full details can be obtained from the 92nd St. “Y” at Lexington Ave., NYC. . . . Horizon has just released an LP, Hollywood Hootenanny, which was recorded live at the Ash Grove, the Ice House, and the Troubadour. . . . Jon Pankake, of Little Sandy Review fame, helped the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis arrange a series of folk music concerts at the Tyrone Guthrie Theater as part of a group of cultural events. The series sold out using such artists as the New Lost City Ramblers, Dock Boggs, Roscoe Holcomb, Jean Ritchie, Bessie Jones, and Doc Watson. This is especially nice to note as the series was faced with competition from much more well-known commercial groups.

Grandpa Jones will be a special extra treat for anyone going to hear Flatt and Scruggs at Carnegie Hall in NYC on April 3rd. . . . The Robert DeCormier Folksingers are in the midst of a 60-city tour of America. . . . Harold Leventhal has offered a folk music package to NBC-TV and CBS-TV consisting of Pete Seeger and Joan Baez. He noted that they were one team that was not suffering from over-exposure on TV. . . . Norman Williams, CJFB-TV, Swift Current, Sask.
