German repertory 1938–43. Music dir. New York, CC, 1956–7, when he tried to pursue enterprising policies; New York, M, 1944–5, 1956–62, 1965–6 and guest cond. from 1971. S Francisco 1938–41, 1948, 1951, 1955, 1957. Bayreuth 1959 (Meistersinger) and 1972 (Tannhäuser). A stimulating conductor of considerable nervous intensity. (R)
