Some Like It Hot, Some Like It Cold

Microbial activity occurs when dead material such as leaves, grass clippings, or old plant roots begin to break down naturally. As these materials break down, nutrients are added to the soil. The closer to the top few inches the nutrients are, the easier it is for young plants to access and benefit from them.

The soil must be at least 40°F for microbial activity to take place. When you add organic matter such as compost to the soil to heat it or cool it, microbes are able to begin to break down the organic matter. This process subsequently causes the soil to heat up again, further encouraging the microbial activity.
