Move the flame around the large piece, concentrating the heat on the larger mass of metal. The smaller piece may float a bit. Use your pick to guide the piece into position if needed. If the pick sticks to your work, move the flame closer, and the heat will release it.

When the solder flows, the small piece will settle down onto the larger one. You may see a flash of silver between the small and large pieces. At this point, remove the heat.

The pick, stick, and paste methods are examples of other soldering operations. The pick method is often used for soldering lots of jump rings, chain, or for production work. A hot solder pick is used to pick up a small chip of solder. The work is heated, and the melted ball of solder from the pick is transferred to the work.

In the stick method, wire solder or a long, thin strip of sheet solder is touched to metal that has reached soldering temperature. This method works well for long solder seams. Care must be taken to not melt too much solder onto the seam.

In the paste method, the solder has been mixed with a carrier and loaded into syringes. Usually lower-temperature solders are used. This method is most often used in low-temperature production work.
