ON THE HOOK

If you want to use a carry-along yarn but you’re not 100 percent sure how it’ll look, try making a test swatch of a few rounds with your eyelash and carry-along yarn before launching into a full project.

Another way to make it easier to see where to insert your hook is by crocheting into the back loops only of your previous stitches. The back loops stick up, away from the work, whereas the front loops sit on top of the other loops that form the stitch and are more easily obscured by the lashes from the rest of the stitch. To help you better see the back loops, fold the lashes at the top of the stitches over to the back with the forefinger of your left hand before inserting your hook into a stitch.

There’s an added bonus to working in the back loops only: if you forget how many rounds you’ve completed, turn the work inside out and count the “rings” left by the unworked front loops. There will be one ring per round you’ve completed.

After you finish crocheting, you can make your amigurumi appear fluffier by freeing up some of the lashes that were trapped in your stitches. To do this, you can rake the tip of your yarn needle or a plastic comb over your stitches. It’s important to use an implement with blunt tips. You don’t want to damage the core of the yarn, just catch and pull free some of the trapped lashes by combing across the surface of the crocheted piece.

If you find that the lashes are too fluffy and you can’t see the eyes or other features through the mass of fuzz, you can trim the lashes into shape using a pair of small, sharp scissors. Just be careful to cut through the lashes only. Don’t snip through the core of the yarn at any point—that would make your crocheting unravel!
