FLOWER ALERT

Velvetleaf (A. theophrasti) is deemed a troublesome weed in some regions.

FLOWERING: The flowers are perfect. Flowers in F1hybrids are mostly sterile.

SEED COLLECTION: The fruits are schizocarps, with anywhere from five to many mericarps, each with two to nine seeds. Hand-pick the brown seed heads.

SEED CLEANING: Dry the flower heads on a screen, then rub or flail to remove the seeds.

GERMINATION: Germinate the seeds for 14 to 28 days at 75°F (24°C).

TRANSPLANTING: Seedlings need 6 to 8 weeks at 70°F (21°C), to reach transplanting size but seeds are usually sown in place.
