• Curry Leaf (Murraya koenigii): The leaves of the curry plant are somewhat delicate and rather easy to harvest. It needs full sun or a southern exposure, as these plants are native to Sri Lanka and India. A clay pot will best maintain the curry plant’s finicky water needs, because in between watering, the plant likes dry topsoil while the roots remain moist. Feed this plant monthly, and repot only when it becomes pot bound. Propagation is from seed.

• Patchouli (Pogostemon heyneanus): This is a fragrant herb used to make scented oils. When the leaves are rubbed together, an exotic scent is released. The patchouli plant quickly reaches heights of 12 inches and recovers quickly after it is pruned. It grows best in full sun and tolerates periods of dryness, which means it can be watered well one day and then left alone for six or seven days. Propagate by dividing the root ball. Feed this plant monthly while it is growing, and repot if it becomes pot bound.

• Cinnamon (Cinnamomum species): The cinnamon tree grows rather slowly, so it is a good container plant with reddish-bronze leaves that develop a spicy smell as it matures. White flowers appear in the spring and summer, and these flowers make way for a small purple fruit. Once the plant is developed enough, the outer bark is scraped off, and then rolls of the inner bark are cut to make cinnamon sticks. Cinnamon is known to reduce blood sugar. The cinnamon plant grows to heights between 3 and 6 feet, so it should be planted in pots that are 8 inches or wider. The cinnamon plant grows best in full or partial sunlight and needs an acidic potting mix that is half peat moss and half perlite. Cinnamon needs light to moderate water. This plant requires light feeding in the growing season. Repot if it outgrows its current container, and propagate through seed.

Herbs and fragrant flowers always have been popular gardening plants, but fruits are becoming very popular contained plants. If they are not used for medicinal or culinary purposes, fruit trees are often handsome additions that lend authenticity and beauty to a kitchen or any other well-lit area.
